While the US is tightening its borders, Canada has gone in the opposite direction. In a major move to boost tourism and clear backlogs, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has expanded its Visa-Free list, but there is a massive catch that is catching travelers off guard.
If you are from one of the newly added countries, you might think you can just book a flight and go. Stop. You likely still need to meet specific Known Traveler conditions, or you will be denied boarding.
Here is the breakdown of the new rules and the US Visa Hack that could get you into Canada faster.
The Visa-Free List (eTA Expansion)
Canada has moved 13 countries from the Visa Required list to the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) list.
The New 13 Countries:
-
Africa: Morocco, Seychelles
-
Asia: Philippines, Thailand
-
Americas: Argentina, Costa Rica, Panama, Uruguay
-
Caribbean: Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago
What This Means:
If you hold a passport from one of these countries, you no longer need to wait months for a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV). Instead, you can apply for an eTA online for just $7 CAD, and it is usually approved in minutes.
The Golden Ticket Condition
Here is the fine print that most blogs miss. You are only eligible for the eTA if you meet one of these two conditions:
-
The Loyalty Rule: You have held a Canadian Visitor Visa in the past 10 years.
-
The US Hack: You currently hold a valid US Non-Immigrant Visa (like a B1/B2 tourist visa).
The Trap: If you are from the Philippines or Morocco but have never traveled to North America before and don't have a US visa, you cannot use the eTA. You still need to apply for the standard paper visa and wait in the queue.
The Air-Only Gotcha
This rule ruins holidays every day. The eTA expansion is valid for Air Travel ONLY.
-
Flying into Toronto? You can use the eTA.
-
Driving from New York to Niagara Falls? You need a full visa.
-
Taking a Cruise from Seattle to Vancouver? You need a full visa.
If you try to cross a land border or board a cruise ship with just an eTA, you will be turned away.
The South African Strategy
For South African passport holders, the rules haven't changed, you still need a visa. However, there is a strategic workaround for families:
If your spouse or children hold a passport from one of the expanded countries (e.g., a British or EU second passport, or one of the Caribbean nations), they can travel on an eTA while you apply for the visa.
Warning: Do not try to link your applications if one of you is eTA-eligible and the other is not. It often confuses the system. Treat them as separate tracks.
How NAC Travel Assists
Canada’s system is now a hybrid of Open and Closed. We ensure you don't fall into the gaps:
-
Eligibility Audit: We instantly check if your US Visa or past travel history qualifies you for the $7 eTA, saving you the expense of a full visa application.
-
The US First Strategy: For clients from the 13 expanded countries, we often recommend applying for a US Visa first. Once approved, you automatically unlock Visa-Free access to Canada, giving you two countries for the price of one application.
-
eTA Processing: We handle the eTA submission to ensure you don't accidentally answer Yes to the wrong medical or background question, which can trigger an automatic manual review and delay your trip by months.
Canada is open, but only if you have the right key. Let us check your pockets before you book your flight.
